The autotool.sh script will look into your Makefile(.am|.in|) for a declaration like AUTOTOOL_VERSION = autoconf 2.52 libtool 1.4 automake 1.5 and the contruct a path to the different autotools packages that are installed under /usr/share/auto - see the project files for the "autotools" package to get prebuilt rpm of quite some combinations of autotools. That way, each project can request a different set of autotools - some may be left on the classic autoconf-2.13 level of the system while others can benefit from the new features of autoconf-2.5x. The same accounts for the other autotools parts - and one can also use it to test the development versions of the new autotools without to ruin your system, but some project might specifically need the some new feature of a development version while not being trapped in possible instabilities of the developments.
